Film and television
Redondo Beach and the pier there with its bars and diners have appeared in numerous film and TV productions. The pier served as the main filming location for the American television series O.C., California (although Redondo Beach is actually not part of Orange County). Also for the series Dr. House, CSI: Miami, Dexter, Baywatch – The Malibu Lifeguards or 24 was filmed in Redondo Beach and Redondo Beach Pier.
Parts of the city, coast and beach can also be seen in films such as Pirates of the Caribbean – At World’s End, Jurassic World, Room 1408, Big Mama’s House 2, Collateral, Dangerous Surf and Men at Work.
The series Trio with four fists was set in the district of King Harbor and played in particular around the Redondo Beach Pier and in the marina. In the series, however, King Harbor was depicted as an independent community, with a police station, hospital, etc.
Music
Redondo Beach is mentioned in the Beach Boys song Surfin ’U.S.A.
Redondo Beach is the theme of the song of the same name by Patti Smith, to be found on her debut album Horses from 1975.
Origin
The origin of the city lies in an extensive land donation by the Spanish King Charles III. from the year 1784. In this land donation, Rancho San Pedro was guaranteed 17 Spanish Leguas (approximately 305 km²). This donation of land was repeated in 1828 by the Mexican government (195 km²) and in 1858 by the USA (100 km²), albeit with a significantly reduced size. A part of this territory later became that part of Redondo Beach, which lies directly on the coast of the South Bay of Los Angeles. The urban area of Redondo Beach consists of two areas that are only connected by a narrow strip, one directly on the coast and one further inland.
Traffic
Redondo Beach is connected to the Los Angeles Metro Rail network by the Green Line. Interstate 105 connects to the extensive network of city highways in the Los Angeles area. The famous Pacific Coast Highway runs through the city.
